Objective:

The selection of a successful candidate to be nominated under the SODELPA Party will be subject to the applicant meeting the criteria for election candidates are outlined under the Fijian Constitution (2013) and the Electoral Act (2014). These laws set the rules for who can stand as a candidate in general elections, which are held to elect members of the Fijian Parliament.

In addition, to the basic criteria set by the Fijian Constitution (2013) and the Electoral Act (2014), the applicant will be required to meet other specific requirements set by the Party in online application portal within the party’s website.

The Specific requirements is important to ensure that the party elects/nominate relevant, knowledgeable, experienced, qualified individual and of good character apply for election with the willingness to serve the Fijian People. Interested candidate encouraged submit an online application.

Basic Criteria to Be a Candidate in Fiji

To be eligible to stand as a candidate for parliamentary elections in Fiji, a person must:

  1. Be a Fijian citizen
    • Must hold Fijian citizenship only (dual citizens are not eligible).
  2. Be at least 18 years old
  3. Be a registered voter
    • The person must be registered on the National Register of Voters.
  4. Have been resident in Fiji for at least 2 years immediately before being nominated (except for diplomats or others exempted under law).
  5. Not be disqualified under the Constitution
    A person is disqualified if they:
    • Have been declared mentally incompetent.
    • Are serving a prison sentence of 12 months or more at the time of nomination.
    • Have been convicted of an offense under the Electoral Act or other serious offenses (e.g., corruption or electoral fraud), unless a specific disqualification period has expired.
    • Are an undischarged bankrupt.
  6. Not hold certain public positions unless they resign
    • This includes judges, civil servants, police/military officers, or members of certain statutory bodies.
    • Such individuals must resign before nomination if they want to contest.
  7. Be nominated by a registered political party or as an independent
    • Must submit a valid nomination, with:
      • Proper documentation
      • Signatures of at least 1,000 registered voters (for independents)
      • Declaration of assets, liabilities, and other required disclosure
