On this sacred Palm Sunday, a time of humility, sacrifice, and reflection, we pause as a nation in deep sorrow to honour the life of Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Fiji has indeed lost a remarkable leader, a true servant of the people, who dedicated over six decades of public service to our beloved nation.

Ratu Epeli was more than a leader — he was:

  • Humble and approachable
  • A people’s chief
  • A man whose warmth, laughter, and kindness filled every room
  • A leader who connected with ordinary Fijians, breaking barriers of status and protocol

From the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, to diplomacy, to serving as President of Fiji, his life was defined by service, unity, and compassion.

Despite his chiefly lineage of Bau and royal ties to Tonga, he chose humility — walking among the people, shaking hands, sharing stories, and spreading joy. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched — in streets, hospitals, villages, and communities across Fiji.

His passing during this holy season reminds us of the values of sacrifice, faith, and servant leadership — values he embodied every day.

Many will remember, from his early years of service to his final days, his signature warmth, his humor, and his unwavering kindness toward all people.

A Life of Legacy & Service

  • Former Commander of the RFMF
  • Diplomat & Ambassador
  • Cabinet Minister
  • Speaker of Parliament
  • President of Fiji
  • Advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness
  • A pillar of the Kubuna Confederacy

He was a statesman, a chief, a soldier, and a servant of the people.

Family & Legacy

Ratu Epeli was the beloved husband of Adi Koila Mara, daughter of Fiji’s founding Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
Their union strengthened the bonds of Bau, Burebasaga, and Lau, and stood as a testament of love and partnership for over 45 years.

Together, they raised two children and built a legacy grounded in service, leadership, and unity.
