SUVA, FIJI – The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) strongly rejects any narrative, opinion poll, or public commentary that seeks to question the rightful place of Indo-Fijians or any other ethnic community within Fiji.

The recent circulation of social media content is not only inappropriate but fundamentally contrary to the principles of respect, equality, and national unity upon which modern Fiji is built.

For more than a century, Indo-Fijians have contributed significantly to Fiji’s development. They have played an integral role in the growth of our agricultural sector, business community, education system, healthcare services, public administration, and national economy. Their contributions, alongside those of iTaukei, Rotuman, Banaban, Chinese, and other communities, have helped shape Fiji into the nation it is today.

SODELPA firmly believes that every citizen born in Fiji or legally recognized as a Fijian has an equal right to call Fiji home. No citizen should ever be made to feel like an outsider in their own country because of their ethnicity, religion, language, or cultural background.

Party Leader Hon. Aseri Radrodro stated:

“Fiji’s future depends on our ability to work together as one people. We may come from different backgrounds, but we share the same hopes for our families, our children, and our nation. We reject any attempt to divide our people along ethnic lines and instead call on all Fijians to focus on unity, respect, and nation-building.”

As Fiji approaches future political and economic challenges, our focus must remain on addressing the issues that matter most to ordinary citizens:

  • Creating employment opportunities for our young people;
  • Reducing the cost of living;
  • Improving healthcare services;
  • Strengthening our education system;
  • Supporting farmers and rural communities;
  • Expanding economic opportunities for all Fijians;
  • Promoting social harmony and national development.

SODELPA urges every Fijian — regardless of background, ethnicity, or political affiliation — to stand firmly against hate speech and divisive narratives, and to instead champion a culture of dignity, tolerance, and shared belonging that reflects the true spirit of our nation.

Our nation has made significant progress in fostering understanding among diverse communities. We must continue moving forward together rather than reopening divisions from the past.

The strength of Fiji has always been found in the resilience of its people and the diversity of its communities. Our future prosperity will depend not on division, but on cooperation; not on exclusion, but on inclusion; and not on fear, but on mutual respect and shared purpose.

SODELPA remains committed to building a Fiji where every citizen is respected, every community is valued, and every family has the opportunity to prosper.

“One Nation, One Future, United in Diversity.”
